The Peddler's Square
View Floor Plan - In case you get lost, this will help you find your way around.
More of a rectangle than a square, The Peddler's Square gained its name from the innumerable peasants that would crowd the street, making it nigh impossible to pass with horse cart, or even upon a lone stallion. Often enough, these desperate beggars would fall victim to panicked hooves, and in vain attempts to peddle their worthless goods met their brutal deaths.

Decades since then, the guards forced these armies of knaves back to their alleyways, now leaving the square open for more respectable men and women to stroll about, making their ways to restaurants or markets for quality entertainment and goods.

Maguna walked into the Peddlers Square of the DesCartes District, the district that he was set to patrol for now, with Thrift and Connor, his new colleagues. As he looked around the district he saw that it was clearly one of the largest districts in the city.

He noticed that the peddlers square was empty, so Maguna decided to continiue with the job at hand, which was to talk to the current businesses. He'd start with the most well known.

Seeing another man in the Square, he thought he recognised him, wasn't he DesCartes?

Curious he walked up to him, and said, "Hello there, how are you? I was ordered by Lucien to patrol this district."

The peddlers square was still quite empty, however the DesCartes district was pretty large.

Glancing to Maguna, Vincent nodded his head quietly. "That was kind of him, though I hope you are aware that once the positions I had advertised are filled, I will be assuming the responsibility of protecting my own district."

Perking a brow, he tapped the man's shield lightly. "I don't suppose Lucien supplies you all that well - the man's not a merchant, so he must rely on others to carry the expenses. It's a shame, for your line of work. Soldiers and guards deserve the best protection gold can buy."

Seeing that DesCartes appreciated their work, he was slightly humbled.

"Yes, the Guard are actually running on a very tight budget, we can barely field positions to cover all the districts. It takes off alot of pressure that you will be introducing private security." He said to DesCartes, thankful of his thought for others, he was actually a very nice man.

"Oh, and I need to remind you, that all businesses must register with a Guild to continue trade without problems. There is a new Guild system, I don't know if you have read about it, well, I guess you would have. If you have any more questions about it you'll have to see Idas, the head of guild affairs. To be honest I don't have a clue what it's about." He said, still slightly bemused by the guild system.

Vincent nodded. "Yes, I have heard - I suppose I will be responsible for registering my marketplace, though the stalls themselves are owned by others. It is my land, I suppose. Speaking of the stress on patrols, I find there to be a fairly small number of able men in Arithmere. I hope to replace the need for several men with a tower manned by only one or two archers."

Vincent glanced upwards, as though the great spire was already built. "With an eagle's view of the district, and ranged weapons to strike down any wrong-doers, or at least slow them down from a distance, it should greatly lessen the stress on the system, and put my men at a lesser degree of risk."

"Well, I didn't suggest that you personally register them all, just give them a strong reminder, you wouldn't want any of them to be hassled by the guilds." He said, while thinking about DesCartes' idea for the tower.

"Hmm, Yes it sounds like that would be a powerful deterrent, wouldn't want an arrow in your leg for stealing would you." He said, chuckling.

Kysa looked around by just moving her eyes to avoid lifting her head into eye line of anyone. There were only two men here chatting so it wasn't as if she had to deal with a crowd but then again it was a lot easier to go unnoticed when your face and movements could be lost in a mass of other bodies. Still this was the fastest way out of the city, she wanted to avoid and difficult questions for a while at least.

What would she do after she was beyond the walls? The question spun round in her head. With no answer she tried to ignore it. What would be, would be.

Just as Vincent moved to respond, he found himself interrupted by one of his servants. The man was not a soldier or a guard, but instead a meek figure of no more than forty years who had been sent around to collect the taxes. He seemed to be breathing hard - some people didn't like to pay taxes, it seemed. As the man recooperated, he handed Vincent a parchment listing records of the buildings that were visited. It included which paid their dues, and which did not.

Glancing over it, Vincent nodded solemnly before thanking the man. "This will do just fine. It seems I have a few places to visit." Turning to Maguna, he said a swift goodbye, before marching off ceremoniously.
